Badenia TAV13 Duplex, s/n 39257

This is the big brother to my Badenia TE13 and TEG13 - This Duplex machine (two registers) is model T, the A stands for automatic division, and the V for “Voreinstellung”, the pre-setting of the dividend at the correct position of the carriage. I bought the machine at a swap meet, and it mainly appears to work, but once in a while the starting capacitor will let out a bit of magic smoke, and the machine will either refuse to start running, or the motor will just keep running. This former behavior has to do with the start capacitor, I believe, the latter has to do with the malfunctioning of the Ku/Mo switch, which is supposed to allow the machine to be hand-operated. If the machine is plugged in with the switchto “Ku”, then the motor will start running. They have placed the position for the hand crank just on top of the electric plug, in such a way that the crank cannot be inserted if the machine is plugged in. If the cable is inserted, the motor should running, so the crank cannot be inserted.

I did not do anything to the machine so far - the main problems appear to be electric, and that is not what rocks my boat, so it can simply continue to exist in this way. Mecchanically it’s absolutely fine.

Let’s walk through the operation of the machine, as demonstrated also in the video below.

They keyboard works as you would expect, numbers can be set and are then visible in the input control register. The little + / x switch either clears the keyboard after every operation for addition, or leaves the set number where it is for the “x” position.

All three registers, the results I and II and the counter III can be turned on or off. The rightmost switch is for register I, the normal result register. The middel lever is for register II, which can be either switched off in the middle, run counter to register I for the lower position, or in the same direction as I for the upper position. It locks in place, and can be made to jump back to the neutral position with the lever at the lower left of the keyboard. Register II, the counter, can also be set up to count positive, negative or not operate.

That leaves us with the multiplication buttons at the right - they are meant to operate from left to right - shift the carriage to the leftmost counter position, and subsequently key in the multiplier. The machine will multiply by the keyed number, and shift the carriage to the left. If the last, rightmost digit of the multiplier is keyed in, the carriage will shift one step to the right and all motor functions will be switched off. The motor can be reset by shifting the carriage left manually. I don’t have a manual to explain why they did this, and what the exact conditions are for which this safety feature operates.

And finally, there's division. The division tabulator on the top left of the carriage will set how many steps the carriage steps to the right before the dividend is added into the register. The dividend is entered into the keyboard, and pulling the Div.-V. lever will tabulate the carriage, and add the dividend in the register, without operating the counter register. Then you key in the divisor and pull the Div. lever. The rest goes fully automatically. Badenia TAV 13 Duplex picture 1
