"Triumph"

This machine is a bit tongue-in cheek. It is one of the second series of early Triumphators, s/n 5341, which did not yet have the numbers engraved in the top plate next to the setting pins, because they had an input control register. This one is still like that, but it was probably traded in in the 1940s or early 1950s on the purchase of a new, somewhat smaller and handier machine. Undeterred, the office machine technician set to work to "restore" it for resale - a new coat of black crinkle paint to hide the wear and tear, and if you're giving the machine a new lease of life, you might as well give it a new decal with a nice name. They did not have "Triumphator" decals lying around, but the large "Triumph" decal from the typewriter was in stock, so that is what the machine is called today.

Quite unique to this machine is also the reset mechanism for the input control register - usually, both in earlier and later machines, it is a wingnut on the left side of the setting control register, but here there is a kind of knurled thumbwheel that can be operated though a hole in the top cover. Odd.

I found it at an estate auction of the Belgian artist Jan van den Abbeel. He collected all sorts of things during his lifetime, but how he got this particular machine will probably always remain a mystery.

See also the page with the other early Triumphators.

It came with its case, which still visibly has the "Triumphator" lettering under the newer paint.
